Acreage resources

Local organisations

Large acreage properties in the western Brisbane suburbs sit within one of the most biodiverse urban-fringe landscapes in Australia. A number of community organisations, council programmes, and government bodies work to conserve and improve that landscape. They are worth knowing about.

The creek systems running through Pullenvale, Brookfield, and Moggill connect to the D'Aguilar Range and the Brisbane River corridor — a network of remnant bushland, riparian habitat, and private land that supports an extraordinary range of native flora and fauna.

Listing here does not imply a formal partnership or endorsement in either direction. These are organisations we think are worth knowing about.

Community conservation groups

Community organisations

  • Moggill Creek Catchment Group

    moggillcreek.org.au

A volunteer community action group working to conserve and improve the natural environment of the Moggill Creek catchment. The group runs an active native plant nursery at the end of Gold Creek Road in Brookfield, staffed entirely by volunteers. Members receive free native tubestock propagated from locally sourced seed. Volunteers are welcome at the nursery on the first or third Monday of each month — morning tea, including home-made cake, is provided. The group maintains a plants page with a weed management section covering species found within the catchment, and a wildlife page covering birds, reptiles, and other native fauna recorded in the area.

  • Pullen Pullen Catchments Group

    pullenpullencatchments.org.au

A community catchment group covering the Pullenvale and Anstead catchments specifically. Runs active bushcare groups at Pullenvale Forest Park and Anstead Bushland Reserve. Also operates a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation programme for sick, injured, or orphaned native animals. Members are also eligible for free tubestock from the Moggill Creek Catchment Group nursery.

  • Cubberla-Witton Catchments Network

    cwcn.org.au

Established in 1999, focused on the re-establishment and maintenance of ecologically healthy catchments across the western suburbs. Links 26 local bushcare groups and operates within Pullenvale Ward. Works in partnership with Brisbane City Council's Community Conservation Partnership Programme. A useful contact for properties in Kenmore Hills and Upper Brookfield where the Cubberla and Witton Creek systems are relevant.

  • Healthy Land & Water

    hlw.org.au

The regional body administering Land for Wildlife SEQ and a range of catchment health programmes across south-east Queensland. Healthy Land & Water is the umbrella organisation above several of the groups listed here, and is the right contact for questions that span multiple programmes or require a regional perspective.

Council and government programmes

Council and government

  • Land for Wildlife SEQ

    lfwseq.org.au

A Brisbane City Council programme connecting private landowners committed to preserving wildlife habitat. The programme spans more than 2,700 hectares across Brisbane's acreage suburbs, with participation from over 840 landowners. Participation is free and voluntary. Registered properties receive a site assessment and management recommendations from a qualified ecologist, plus advice on weed management, revegetation, and wildlife-friendly practices.

  • Brisbane City Council — Weed Management

    weeds.brisbane.qld.gov.au

BCC's weed identification tool provides photographs, descriptions, and management advice for declared invasive plants across the Brisbane area. The most accessible starting point for identifying an unknown plant on your property and understanding your obligations under the Biosecurity Act 2014. BCC also issues individual property pest management plans for landowners with declared pest plant infestations.

  • Queensland Fire and Emergency Services — Hazard Reduction

QFES administers the hazard reduction permit system for open burning in Queensland. If you are considering a burn-off on your property, a permit is required during declared periods and seasonal restrictions apply. Link to QFES permit page to be confirmed at publication.

  • Biosecurity Queensland — Declared Pest Plant Register

The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries maintains the official register of declared invasive plants under the Biosecurity Act 2014. Relevant for any property where you have received a BCC notice about weed management obligations. Link to DAF declared pest plant register to be confirmed at publication.
